Urmston grew from a village into a commuter town once the railway opened in 1873, and the red-brick Victorian and Edwardian terraces, semis and villas put up in the decades that followed still stand in many parts of the town. Most were roofed in blue slate, with brick chimney stacks and lead flashing that have now seen well over a century of weather.
Elsewhere there are gable-fronted houses from between the wars, post-war semi-detached and detached homes, and mid-twentieth-century estates towards the edges of Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme. That means clay and concrete tiled roofs with mortar-bedded ridges, flat roofs on extensions and garages, and uPVC roofline. We work on all of them.
We are based at 9a Station Road in Urmston, so Flixton, Davyhulme, Stretford and Sale are all a short drive.

Urmston has red-brick Victorian and Edwardian houses with slate roofs, gable-fronted homes from between the wars and a lot of post-war semi-detached housing, and each has its own way of letting water in. These are the faults our roofers are asked to look at most often across Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme.
The houses built in Urmston in the years after the railway opened in 1873 were mostly roofed in blue slate. The slate itself usually outlasts the nails holding it, so on a roof of that age the fixings rust through and slates slide down, sit crooked or come off in a gale. A roofer can normally refix them or fit matching slates without the whole roof coming off. See our slate roofing.
Older houses across Urmston have brick chimney stacks, many of them no longer used for a fire. A stack stands in the wind and rain on all four sides, so the mortar joints wear back and the lead flashing where it meets the roof splits or pulls out of the brickwork. Damp on the chimney breast or a brown patch on the ceiling next to it is the usual sign. See our chimney repairs and lead flashing repairs.
The tiled roofs on the inter-war and post-war houses in Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme were finished with ridge tiles and roof edges set in sand and cement. Years of frost and rain break that mortar down until pieces fall out, which leaves ridge tiles loose and the verges open to wind-blown rain. See our ridge tile repairs and dry verge systems.
Bay windows are a feature of the Victorian and Edwardian houses in Urmston, and each one has a small roof of its own in lead, felt or tile. When that covering splits, or the joint against the house wall opens up, water comes through and stains the wall or ceiling just above the window. See our bay window roof repairs.
Garages, dormers and rear extensions around Urmston and Flixton are often roofed in felt, which in time blisters, cracks and lets water pond on the surface. A single fault on a sound roof can be patched, but once the whole covering is breaking down a new one is better value than repeated repairs. See our flat roofing.
Moss coming off the roof and leaves from garden and street trees fill gutters fast, and on a terrace or a pair of semis one blocked length can pour onto the neighbouring house too. The water running over the back keeps the fascia board wet until the timber goes soft and the gutter brackets pull loose. See our gutter repairs and gutter cleaning.
